Boys Basketball: Mid-Missouri HomeSchool finishes 14th at nationals


SPRINGFIELD — The Mid-Missouri HomeSchool Mavericks took 14th place in Boys 18U Division I at the National Christian HomeSchool Basketball National Championships earlier this month.

The Mavericks posted a 3-4 record during the weeklong tournament.

Mid-Missouri HomeSchool played two games March 11 in Pool A seeding. The Mavericks won 54-44 against the CHSA HomeSchool Wolverines from Houston and lost 56-42 to Memphis (Tenn.) Home Education Association.

Cole Marks and Kyle Aulgur both scored 13 points to lead the Mavericks against CHSA, while Paul Hayes and Owen Hargis each added 10 points. Marks added six assists and Hayes finished with four steals.

Hayes scored a team-high 16 points to lead the Mavericks against MHEA.

In a play-in game March 12 against Benton (Ind.) HomeSchool, the Mavericks won 41-38. Paul Hayes led Mid-Missouri HomeSchool 17 points and five steals.

Later that day, the Mavericks lost 62-60 in overtime to the Southern Missouri RUSH. Aulgur had a team-high 18 points for Mid-Missouri HomeSchool, followed by Paul Hayes with 17 points and Hargis with 10 points. Aulgur grabbed 15 rebounds for a double-double.

Mid-Missouri HomeSchool then received the No. 5 seed in the eight-team Bronze Ball bracket. In the Mavericks’ first-round game March 13, they lost 58-49 to fourth-seeded HEA HomeSchool Firebirds from Wayne, Mich. Kaden Hayes and Mark finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

In a loser’s bracket semifinal game March 14, the Mavericks won 58-41 against eighth-seeded Harrisonburg (Va.) HomeSchool. Paul Hayes led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points.

In the fifth-place game March 15, Mid-Missouri HomeSchool lost 78-64 to sixth-seeded Parker-Tarrant HomeSchool from Fort Worth, Texas.

Paul Hayes had a game-high 18 points for the Mavericks, followed by Marks with 16 points. Hargis also reached double figures with 11 points.

Paul Hayes was selected to the All-American team.

Mid-Missouri HomeSchool finished with a 31-9 record.
