Clinton sweeps Maquoketa in home opener | High School Sports


CLINTON – The Clinton River Queens started their season off strong on Friday evening, opening up their season with a sweep of Maquoketa.

Sescie Haan embraced her role at the number one spot for Clinton, picking up a 6-0 and 6-0 victory over Izzy Yoder for the first point. She was followed by sophomore Maddie Rowden who took care of business at the number two spot with a 6-0 and6-0 sweep over Grace Coyle.

Elizabeth Grinnall, a freshman and newcomer to the varsity squad battled to a 6-2 and 6-2 to defeat Maquoketa’s Maraya Downey.

Katie Atkinson and Lou Gonzales both returned from last for the Queens and they each made their impact on Friday. Atkinson got the win over Mia Reicks 6-2 and 6-0. Gonzales defeated Sophie Payton 6-1 and 6-2.

Finally, Nora Brown slid into the sixth spot for Clinton, securing the singles sweep 6-1 and 6-0 over Alaina Bahl.

Haan and Rowden got the sweep in doubles with two 6-1 victories. Unfortunately, the other two doubles matches were cut short due to an injured Maquoketa player.

Clinton improves to 1-0 on the year and will host Davenport on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
