Homeschool students celebrate historic figures | Community

A local homeschool group, which is affiliated with the international homeschool program and curriculum Classical Conversations, held its “Faces of History” event at Christ’s Church Roswell on March 25.

In a press release, it says that the group’s fourth, fifth and sixth graders worked hard on their assignment, researching an American historical figure who made a significant and worthy contribution to our nation and/or the world. The students learned to write a research paper, complete with MLA (Modern Language Association) formatting and a bibliography. The project culminated with the students dressing up like their subjects and sharing their research papers with family and friends.

“Faces of History” this year ranged from Sacagawea and Harry Houdini to Cy Young, Fanny Crosby and Robert Oppenheimer, with three unique takes on George Washington, among many others. The students and the tutors celebrated the event with hot dogs, apple pie and lemonade.

According to Shawna Perry, support representative of Classical Conversations, tutors, parents, grandparents and legal guardians meet once a week and learn “fun ways to teach the week’s lessons at home.” The program serves families with children from K-4 through high school graduation.
