JCPS parents brace for more transportation problems

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – An hour before the end of classes, the line of cars outside Noe Middle School winds through the parking lot, out the gate and down the street.

”Every year it gets a little bit worse,” parent Nate Hunt said. “I mean, I don’t know. It already takes me two and a half hours to pick up and drop off my kids every day.”

In August, when the buses stop running to this and other magnet schools, parents expect more problems.

”People are going to be real mad,” parent Jessica Waxler said. “They’re already real mad, especially down that main street back there. People honking, cussing at you. It’s rough.”

Parents express a crisis of confidence in the ability of JCPS to reliably bus students to and from school.

Parents are already turning to social media looking for alternatives.

Elderserve CEO Timothy Findley Jr. is attempting to organize transportation for several hundred magnet school students in the Russell and Newburg neighborhoods.

”We see people who are sort of at a loss for words,” Findley said. “They don’t know what they’re going to do come August. So we’re trying to figure all this out in the midst of people who are dealing with a lot of questions.”

Eunice Johnson is just one JCPS parent asking questions.

“I want a sure answer that you’re going to have a way to get these kids back-and-forth to school like they’re supposed to,” Johnson said.

When the school year started, Johnson said her grandson was 5 hours late riding the bus home from magnet school Shawnee.

Without a clear back-up plan to get him to and from school in August, she said she may have to opt for homeschooling.

”It’s really stressing me out,” Johnson said. “I’m already sick and stuff. I don’t know what to do at this point in time. I really need someone to secure that answer for me, so I can, like, I need to rest at night.”
