LEMMON, S.D. (KFYR) – A photo may be worth a thousand words, but these pictures might leave you speechless. And they’ll definitely leave a smile on your face.

They are photos of a very special grand march in one small South Dakota town over the weekend.

The photos tell the story of two generations sharing a very special evening, and the smiles captured in the pictures just might melt your heart. They are pictures of a very special grand march.

Students at Lemmon High School took a few minutes before prom to stop by the local nursing home.

Lemmon senior Emily Faughen works as a CNA at the Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon. This grand march was her idea. She was excited for her residents to see her all dressed up.

“They always just see me wearing scrubs,” Faughen laughed.

On Saturday, the residents got to see her and dozens of other high school students in their prom dresses and suits.

“I know it made the residents’ day,” said Faughen. “You could see the joy and the light in their eyes when we all walked through there.”

“It’s almost like we lit up the room, because we walked in and they’re all looking at you and smiling, and kind of makes you smile inside, too, because you know you’re making them happy,” added Lemmon junior Nathan Penfield.

That happiness goes both ways. Students say this was quite possibly the highlight of this year’s prom.

“The best part was them leaning over to you and just starting a conversation asking about different details of prom,” said Penfield.

“I just loved seeing the smiles on their faces,” added Faughen.

Smiles that are forever preserved in these one-of-a-kind prom photos.

This is the first time Lemmon students have held a grand march at the nursing home, but they hope to make it an annual tradition.
