Open house highlights adult education opportunities in Wood County

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – An open house on Wednesday showed off adult education opportunities in Wood County.

Mid-Ohio Valley Adult Education hosted an open house at their offices at Saint Joseph Landing earlier today for the Wood County Adult Learning Center and Wood County SPOKES. The Learning Center and SPOKES are located on the fifth and sixth floors of Saint Joseph Landing respectively and both offer adult education and workforce training.

Mid-Ohio Valley Adult Education Coordinator Julie Hagan said often people associate adult education programs with getting a GED. She said they have a lot more to offer. “We still offer high school equivalency because that’s a very important step, but that’s the first step,” Hagan said. “It’s not the last step. So, our goal is for people to enter post-secondary education and/or find the employment to have a self-sustaining and family sustaining wage, which is a very difficult thing to do right now.”

To reach that goal, the Learning Center offers a variety of programs outside of high school equivalency including entrance exam prep for nursing, English as a Second Language instruction, and professional certifications in hospitality, customer service, and more.

All of those programs are offered for free.
