RAPID CITY, S.D. – To celebrate their history and welcome in a new beginning, South Middle School in Rapid City organized a farewell open house for former students to tour the old facility before its scheduled demolition in the summer.

The event attracted attendees spanning from the school’s inception in 1959 to recent graduates.

Former students strolled through the halls, revisiting old classrooms and noting that not much has changed since they attended school. Jeanne Deming, Assistant Principal for South Middle School, expressed overwhelming gratitude for the supportive community.

“It’s overwhelming. It’s just a really cool thing to see all the people and have them come in here and celebrate with us,” Deming remarked. “I’ve met people that went to school here in the seventies with my siblings. Some of my classmates are here. Some people that were here in the sixties. So, it has just been so much fun already.”

The open house featured displays of past yearbooks and photographs, inviting attendees to reminisce about their school days.

Posters were also set up for former students to sign and mark their years of attendance. Deming mentioned plans to place these posters into the new school once construction is complete.

South Middle School plans to host an open house for the new facility at the end of August.
