Stern warning issued against illegal school operators

The Department of Education in Limpopo is strongly warning those operating illegal schools to stop doing so immediately.

Limpopo’s chief education specialist Marwala Rasethaba says the department only recognises properly registered public schools, independent schools, and home education as platforms to educate children in the basic education sector.

He says private schools should also first receive approval from the department before they can operate, contrary to some who start immediately after only submitting registration forms to the head of department.

Speaking on Capricorn Talk last night, Rasethaba emphasised that provisioning of education is a state responsibility, hence all three need to be registered with the state.

He says with regards to home education, parents must apply to the HOD to have their child taught at home and that no other institution is permitted to register a child for home schooling on behalf of the parent.

Rasethaba says online platforms can only serve as support for children in all the 3 recognised platforms.

He says in the interest of learners, district directors are instructed to open criminal cases against those operating illegal schools, as the type of curriculum being delivered, and its quality cannot be guaranteed.

He has urged parents to find out first from education offices before registering their children at private schools.
