Tree falls on Jackson home, inches away from crushing teen in bed

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – North Jackson was among the areas that took a major hit during Wednesday’s storms, with a significant number of trees falling.

A mother thought her son staying home from school would keep him safe, but it was a close call. A towering gum tree fell on a North Jackson home, landing inches from a teen in his bed.

“It was the worst experience he’s ever had I could say,” said Lakisha Smith.

The health care reimbursement specialist was working at her Plantation Boulevard home around 12:30 Wednesday while her son Kanielius was in his bedroom. The Smiths kept their sons home from school fearing they’d be trapped at school in the bad weather, but home wasn’t the safest place.

“I heard crackling, and my son heard crackling as well, but we both thought it was just lightning and thunder,” said Smith. “But then it was a hard boom and the house shook, and that’s when my son here in this room started screaming.”

A support beam stopped the tree from crushing the 15-year-old.

“I started pulling the debris off of him, but I hadn’t looked up to see that the tree was still over the bed, and it was just inches away from him,” said the still-amazed mother.

“He was pretty shook up about it, but as the day came on he calmed down,” said father Neil Smith. “He was so calm he said he was going to school today. So just happy to hear that nothing happened.”

Kaneilius did end up with a few scrapes and a harrowing story of being spared a tragedy.

“I almost did not make the right decision to let him stay home from school because this could have been his last day at home, but God protected him,” added his mother.

The tree removal process is underway, but the house is in need of serious repair.
