WOMEN OF ALDINE. Susan’s Journey Learning, Growing, and Giving Back. – Aldine ISD

Aldine ISD’s Child Nutrition Services Executive Director Susan D’Amico’s story is one of determination, passion, and the belief that it’s never too late to learn. She learned this lesson early on in her life and work, realizing that education and perseverance are the keys to success. Despite feeling like she missed out on completing her education in her early 20s, Susan didn’t let that stop her. She seized the opportunity when she heard about evening classes at the University of Texas to become a certified Ophthalmic Medical Assistant. This marked the beginning of a fulfilling ten-year career in the medical field, where she cared for patients and embraced new techniques and approaches.

Despite the challenges of raising two children, she returned to college, initially majoring in Business before following her passion for Nutrition and Dietetics. In 1996, she graduated at the top of her class, supported by her cheering children.

Her career in public schools reflects her commitment to finding her passion and making a difference. Starting as a Registered Dietitian and Bookkeeper, Susan found joy in teaching nutrition to students. Over 28 years, she took on leadership roles, broadened her knowledge, and earned high honors. Her journey eventually led her to serve as the Director of Child Nutrition, where she continued to inspire and support her team.

Susan believes in the importance of continuous learning and being open to new opportunities. Actively involved in professional associations, she teaches classes and serves on committees to provide educational opportunities for her colleagues. She also embraces the “leave it better than you found it” rule, lifting up and supporting others along the way.
In her role at Aldine ISD, Susan remains dedicated to putting kids first every day. She strives to create a healthier future for the next generation through initiatives promoting nutrition education and physical health. Her commitment to excellence has earned her department recognition and awards, but Susan remains humble, always focused on making a positive impact.

As part of Women’s Month celebration, Susan hopes to inspire other women to chase their dreams and make a difference. Her story exemplifies the power of education, perseverance, and the belief that it’s never too late to learn and succeed.
